5) The Chrism Mass is properly concelebrated by the bishop at the Cathedral of the diocese joined by his clergy – and particularly his priests. It is a sign of the unity and communion of the priests with their bishop. It is prescribed to be celebrated Thursday morning of Holy Week but is moved to Tuesday evening throughout the United States for the convenience of all in the diocese to be able to attend. At this liturgy the priest will renew their oath of obedience to the bishop. The Holy Oils for each parish and diocesan institution are also blessed and consecrated (sacred chrism), and then distributed to the institutions for their use during the coming year.
